Most of the clients and other staff are White men over age 45.Ī person identified by multiple grounds may experience disadvantage that is compounded by the presence of each of the grounds. When he asks for an explanation, he is told that his approach is too “urban” and would not be a good fit with the existing client base. However, he may also be exposed to discrimination on intersecting grounds on the basis of being identified as a “young Black man” based on the various assumptions and/or stereotypes that are uniquely associated with this socially significant intersection.Įxample: A young Black man in a customer service position is denied a promotion.

He may be exposed to discrimination based on any of the grounds of race and/or colour, age, and gender on their own. Similarly, a young Black man can be seen as a “Black person,” or as a “young person,” or as a “man” and is protected under the grounds of race, age and gender. As lesbians, this woman and her spouse may be exposed to forms of discrimination that other Jewish women with children are not. For example, a Jewish lesbian with a child and same-sex spouse can be seen as a “mother of a child” or a “Jewish woman” and would be protected under the grounds of marital status, family status, creed and sexual orientation. Based on their unique combination of identities, people may be exposed to particular forms of discrimination and may experience significant personal pain and social harm that come from such acts of discrimination. a) When grounds intersectĪ person’s experience of discrimination is often linked to the compounding effects of multiple grounds.
